We
would like to visit every EM laboratory but our time and their funds do
not allow this to happen.
The next best option is
to let the client work through a course on their own, in their own time,
in their own laboratory, that is what Portfolio is all about

SEM
Portfolio & TEM Portfolio
and
"NEW"
Twin
Detector FEG SEM portfolio
These courses are made up of
series of practical exercises designed for microscopists to conduct in
their own laboratory. All the specimens, text books, or CD, guide-lines,
and instructions are provided. The object of each course is to help the
microscopist to understand the microscope in greater depth. Whilst gaining
this knowledge the microscopist develops a portfolio of micrographs which
form the A to Z of scanning or transmission electron microscopy.
A completed, and graded,
PROTRAIN PORTFOLIO demonstrates the microscopists
expertise in the subject. The practicals cover the use of
such features as spot size, working distance (specimen position),
accelerating voltage, filament saturation and bias settings. The
instructions include guidelines which teach the microscopist to optimise
the instrument's performance, how to calibrate the magnification, as well
as showing the microscopist how to attain the maximum resolution from
their instrument (often higher than the manufacturer claims) at a range of
accelerating voltages.
These courses have been developed
from our very extensive experience in practical scanning and transmission
electron microscopy, gained by running courses throughout the world. Many
test runs have been conducted to prove the course material. We are certain
that the procedures within PROTRAIN PORTFOLIO
will improve the knowledge of any electron microscope operator no matter
how experienced.
In addition to the knowledge
derived from the course is the added feature of PROTRAIN
PORTFOLIO being appraised by us, and being an excellent guide to
others when assessing the microscopists ability. A registered
PROTRAIN PORTFOLIO student is entitled to
help over the phone, by letter, by fax, or by e-mail, to ensure that any
practical problems are overcome. Each year optional one day
PROTRAIN PORTFOLIO courses are held offering additional assistance
to our students.
When a student considers the
course is complete the PROTRAIN PORTFOLIO is
appraised by Protrain and their group of assessors. Laboratories are
welcome to purchase a PROTRAIN PORTFOLIO for
use when training new operators. In this case the PORTFOLIO
is not submitted for appraisal, however through its use within the
laboratory each microscopists skill level may be "independently"
accessed. To have a general laboratory operator training to course to hand
ready made and structured, even
without the Protrain back-up, makes the PORTFOLIO package well worth while.
WE HAVE FOUND THAT UNLESS A TEM HAS A HIGH
QUALITY IMAGING SYSTEM OR A BELOW THE SCREEN IMAGING SYSTEM THE SUBTLE IMAGE
CHANGES DEVELOPED WITHIN THE TEM PORTFOLIO ARE NOT RESOLVED. IN SHORT
WE HAVE FOUND THAT THE IMAGING SYSTEM MAY DICTATE THE LIMIT OF IMAGE QUALITY
NOT THE SKILL OF THE OPERATOR OR THE QUALITY OF THE INSTRUMENT!
